Drip Irrigation vs. Spray Heads vs. Rotors: What’s Right for Your Sarasota Landscape?

Your irrigation system isn’t one-size-fits-all — and choosing the wrong delivery method for each zone can waste thousands of gallons per year and stress your plants at the same time. Here’s a clear breakdown of the three main irrigation types and when each one is right for Sarasota properties.

Spray Heads: Best for Small Lawn Areas and Groundcovers

Spray heads deliver a fixed fan of water in patterns ranging from 90° to 360°. They’re the most common head type on Sarasota residential properties.

  • Best for: Tight turf areas under 15 feet wide, groundcovers, narrow side yards
  • Application rate: Fast — typically delivers one inch of water in 25–30 minutes
  • Weakness: High precipitation rate means water often runs off sandy Sarasota soil before it absorbs. Cycle-and-soak programming (multiple short cycles with rest periods between) is essential

Rotors: Best for Large Turf Areas

Rotor heads use a spinning mechanism to deliver water in a slow, rotating arc. They have a much lower precipitation rate than spray heads, making them far more compatible with Florida’s sandy soils.

  • Best for: Turf areas wider than 15 feet, open lawn zones
  • Application rate: Slower — typically delivers one inch of water in 45–60 minutes
  • Important: Never mix spray heads and rotor heads on the same irrigation zone. Their precipitation rates are too different — you’ll end up with puddles in one area and drought stress in another

Drip Irrigation: Best for Plant Beds, Trees, and Shrubs

Drip systems deliver water directly to the root zone through emitters, soaker lines, or micro-sprayers. They’re the most efficient irrigation method available.

  • Best for: Shrub beds, perennial gardens, vegetable gardens, trees, and any landscape area that doesn’t require sprinkler-style coverage
  • Water efficiency: Uses 30–50% less water than spray irrigation by eliminating evaporation and overspray
  • Phase 3 bonus: Drip irrigation is exempt from Sarasota’s day/time watering restrictions — it can run any day, any time, even under Phase 3 conditions
  • Maintenance note: Emitters need periodic flushing and inspection; roots can grow into and clog emitter lines over time

Rotary Nozzles (MP Rotators): The Best of Both Worlds

A newer category that’s gained significant adoption in Florida: rotary nozzles look like spray heads but deliver water in slow, rotating streams like a mini rotor. They have a much lower precipitation rate than standard spray heads — reducing runoff on Sarasota’s sandy soils — while still covering small- to medium-sized areas efficiently.

The Mixing Problem
