Special Cases
- New sod or newly installed plant material: May be watered any time on the day of installation, then any day for the first 30 days. After that, the standard schedule applies.
- Drip irrigation: Exempt from day/time restrictions. Drip systems to trees, shrubs, and plant beds may run any day, any time.
- Hand watering: Manual watering with a hose (attended, not left unattended) is also exempt.
- Reclaimed water: Check with your utility provider — reclaimed water schedules may differ from potable water restrictions.
Don’t Forget: Your Rain Sensor Must Be Working
Florida law requires every automatic irrigation system to have a functioning rain sensor, soil moisture sensor, or smart controller. Even if you’re watering on the right day at the right time, a non-functional sensor is a violation. Sarasota County is currently issuing citations without prior warning.
